A NORTHERN Counties Committee ‘W’ class 2-6-0 has emerged as a contender if the RPSI elects to pursue a new-build locomotive project.
The society has been considering the reconstruction of a second LMS-NCC ‘WT’
2-6-4T (or ‘Jeep’) for a number of years, having acquired a spare set of driving wheels, fittings and motion components when Northern Ireland finished with steam in 1971. However, the project has never really moved forward owing largely to the current redevelopment work at Whitehead, and the overhauls of GNR(I) 4-4-0s Nos. 131 and 171 Slieve Gullion.
With the Whitehead project now just months away for completion and No. 131 not far behind, thoughts on whether a new-build is a realistic option for the society have emerged again, and if so, would one of the handsome Moguls be preferable to another ‘Jeep’?
