THE first of 55 GE ‘Evolution’ series locomotives ordered by Pakistan Railways in June 2015 was delivered to Karachi by ship in late-January 2017.
The Class 9000 locomotives are intended for freight (primarily coal) from Port Qasim, in Karachi, to Sahiwal as part of plans by the Pakistan Government to increase the amount of freight carried by rail in the country from 4% to 20% within the next decade.
All 55 locos in the $400million order will be built in the USA at GE’s factory in Erie, Pennsylvania. Delivery of the locos should be completed by December.

Each 4,500HP loco is fitted with an 8,000-litre diesel fuel tank and can pull 3,400 tonnes (or 40 high-capacity coal hopper wagons).
