UK Railtours heads for Old Dalby test track in December

UK RAILTOURS has obtained an agreement to run two railtours over the much-requested Old Dalby test track in Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire, five years after its initial efforts failed.

UK Railtours will make a rare visit to the Old Dalby test track in late-December. The busy facility is used to test new trains and equipment, including London Underground ‘S’ Stock and Hitachi IEP sets. Harry Needle No. 47714 is seen with Hitachi set No. 800101 on June 4, 2015. CHRIS MILNER

Now known as the Rail Industry Development Centre (RIDC) Melton, the 13-mile Network Rail-owned facility is used to test a wide variety of new trains for use on Network Rail and London Underground systems.

With new train orders at a record high, and more than 6,000 vehicles currently on order for delivery before the end of 2020, spare paths on the test track are said to be scarce.
