IÉ’s passenger business carried 42.8m passengers in 2016, an increase of 8%, with 2016 revenue of €193.7m being the highest recorded in the history of the company, and growth recorded across DART, Commuter and Intercity businesses.
Rail freight revenue increased from €8.8m to €9m in 2016, with total tonne kilometres increasing from 96.4m to 101.4m, primarily because of an increase in mineral ore volumes (Tara mines).
The report states the company is also engaging with a number of parties regarding substantial rail freight opportunities within the biomass market.
