SITTINGBOURNE & Kemsley Light Railway-based Bagnall 0-6-2T Superb provided guest steam for Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway’s (W&LLR) September 1-3 Steam Gala.
It is believed to be the first time the 1940-built loco had worked away from its Kent home, with operations including double-heading with W&LLR’s Kerr, Stuart 0-6-2T Joan, showing their design similarities.
Out-of-ticket Hunslet 2-6-2T 3815/1954 Sierra Leone Railway No. 85 was displayed at Llanfair Caereinion station, having returned via a six-location tour around the country following six years at Locomotion.

To celebrate the year in which W&LLR preservation exceeded its time as a commercial railway a Saturday evening train ran from Welshpool to Llanfair, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display, organised by Electrify Pyrotechnics.
As the train passed each of the station locations along the eight-mile route it was greeted by a different display, culminating in a pyro-musical and light show at Llanfair.
■ 2017 is the 54th year the railway has been operated, almost entirely by volunteers, overtaking the 53 between 1903-1956 when it was run by Cambrian Railways, Great Western Railway and British Railways.
