THE Mid-Hants Railway’s £1.5million overhaul of Bulleid ‘Merchant Navy’ No. 35005 Canadian Pacific reached an important milestone in late September when the locomotive was re-wheeled at Eastleigh.
Timing has been an important driver in reaching this stage of the overhaul, with the Pacific needing to be back on its wheels to enable its movement in an increasingly busy Eastleigh Works.
Consequently, MHR volunteers, assisted by Arlington Fleet Services (AFS) specialist staff, have been working to make the loco’s frames fit to receive the wheelsets, including frame alignment checks, and the machining and fitting of horn guides/lines.

“This is a significant milestone for the staff and volunteers working on Canadian Pacific’s restoration,” said the MHR’s Dr Becky Peacock.
