RAIL Operations Group (ROG) operated a special charter train from Derby to Moreton-on-Lugg on October 8, writes Keith Fender, taking an indirect route, which included a visit to Peak Rail at Rowsley.
ROG’s Nos. 37884 and 47848 were in charge, with the ‘Lickey Incliner II’ running to the Tarmac loading sidings at Moreton-on-Lugg, near Hereford. It is believed to be the first passenger train into the Moreton site since 1971.
The train was organised by well-known Derby railwayman Alan Spencer, who is still working on the main line railway at the age of 70. Alan’s railway career started in February 1963 at Bromsgrove depot as a locomotive cleaner and then a fireman on the famous Lickey Incline.

After graduating to be a driver he worked at many BR depots, including Bescot, Stratford and Wimbledon, and after Privatisation, with South West Trains and private freight companies. He is now a control manager for ROG.
In his spare time he has found time to operate a railtour company offering enthusiast charter trains in Switzerland. He is also a senior member of the Locomotive & Carriage Institution.
