PATHFINDER Tours is running two steam-hauled specials to the Settle-Carlisle Line on August 11 and 15.
They will mark the 50th anniversary of BR’s last steam train in August 1968 and the 10th birthday of new-build ‘A1’ No. 60163 Tornado.
The ‘Settle & Carlisle Golden Express I’ on August 11 starts with diesel haulage at Bristol Temple Meads, with Tornado taking over the train at Preston for an assault on the legendary West Coast Main Line climbs to Grayrigg and Shap.

The ‘A1’ will avoid Carlisle Citadel by taking the freight-only curve from Upperby Junction to London Road Junction. It then heads south over the S&C via Ais Gill, Hellifield, Clitheroe and Blackburn to Crewe, where Tornado gives way to a diesel for the return to Bristol.
