THE East Lancashire Railway’s DMU gala on November 4-5 (RM Oct, p94) was a particularly notable event.
Combined with The Railcar Association’s (TRA) annual convention it saw no fewer than three DMU sets returned to traffic after overhauls.
Star of the show was the Class 105 Cravens unit, which worked its first passenger train on the Saturday, following a 21-year overhaul. DMBS No. Sc51485 and DTCL No. E56121 form the only surviving operational example of this once-numerous class.

Also entering service after a much quicker overhaul was another rarity, a Class 110 ‘Calder Valley’ set. The three cars were acquired from the Wensleydale Railway, where they had been split up, but have now been reformed into one set.
