THE biennial InnoTrans trade fair took place in Berlin from September 18-21, with several new UK trains displayed alongside counterparts from all over Europe, and from China.

Part of a large contingent from Swiss firm Stadler was the first completed Class 755/4 bi-mode regional ‘FLIRT’ for Greater Anglia – No. 755405.
It was possible to walk through the train, including the central power pack vehicle, which contains four Deutz V8 engines, with a total output of around 2,800hp.

Overall impressions of the ‘755’ interior and the fit and finish of the train were extremely positive.
One Class 755/4 has been on test at Velim, with others being tested in Poland and Romania.

Standing alongside one of its Swiss cousins, the superb ‘Traverso’ EMU for the Sudostbahn’s ‘Voralpen Express’ tourist service, made for some interesting comparisons between UK and mainland European loading gauges, and what is possible within those limits.
