Railway Heritage Trust supports projects worth more than £5m

THE Railway Heritage Trust (RHT) supported 65 restoration and conservation projects during 2017/18, with grants worth £2.15million.

Further partnership funding from organisations, including the Department for Transport, the Scottish Government, train operators, local authorities, private companies and community groups, added another £2.9m across the country.

This fine late-19th century Highland Railway waiting room at Nairn, on the Aberdeen to Inverness line, is being restored with the help of a grant from the Railway Heritage Trust. Once complete, it will be occupied by a local group of the Men’s Shed project, which fosters social inclusion by offering a space for men and women to learn new skills and share ideas. ANDY SAVAGE

Of the 69 grants awarded by the RHT in 2017/18, the largest was £229,063 towards the relocation of a Brunel-style train shed from Maidenhead to Wallingford, on the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway.

Other significant grants included £181,300 for the restoration of heritage features as part of Network Rail’s £1billion redevelopment of London Bridge station, £136,000 for the restoration of an LNWR swing bridge at Oxford (Rewley Road), and five separate grants of £100,000 each for restoration work at Bognor Regis, Levenshulme South, Middlesbrough, Perth and Worksop stations.
