WORK is underway at Dawlish in Devon to repair four breakwaters which help to protect the west of England main line from the force of waves.
The work is being undertaken with the help of ‘world-leading engineers’ in coastal, tunnel, cliff and railway engineering, and is expected to take six months.
Expert engineering teams from Network Rail and BAM Nuttall will repair breakwaters at at Boat Cove, Coastguard’s Point, Colonnade Underpass and Langstone Rock, after the structures were identified as being in a poor state of repair and not providing the protection the coast and this iconic stretch of railway line requires.

Protecting the route through Dawlish has been identified as a national priority by the Government, and these immediate short-term improvements are being made while Network Rail continues a £15million detailed study of longer-term options to protect the railway.
