Wensleydale beckons for resurgent Tornado

THE A1 Steam Locomotive Trust’s flagship Peppercorn Pacific No. 60163 Tornado will break new ground for the type later this month when it visits the Wensleydale Railway (WR).

Tornado ventured back onto the main line on January 15 – the first time since its failure on the ‘Ebor Flyer’ last April. 

‘A1’ No. 60163 Tornado runs through Newark Northgate at 21.38 on January 15 with support coach in tow during its first main line test run to Doncaster. It was the Peppercorn Pacific’s first main line outing in nine months. SIMON LATHLANE

This move followed lengthy repairs and running-in at the Nene Valley Railway.

An initial light engine and support coach run from Wansford to Doncaster was completed successfully, after which it worked a 400-tonne load to Northallerton. The ‘A1’ ran well, although a motion pin was found to be warm on arrival at Northallerton, which accounted for a slightly off beat exhaust.
