Limerick the destination for Irish railway preservation society’s signature railtour

THE Railway Preservation Society of Ireland has released the preliminary itinerary for its 48th annual May multi-day railtour, which this year will be taking a circular route from Dublin to Limerick.

A contender for the RPSI’s May tour perhaps? GNR(I) ‘Q’ class 4-4-0 No. 131 is paired with its newly constructed tender for the first time at Whitehead on December 11. The locomotive returned to steam a year ago, but has been awaiting the completion of its own tender before it can join the society’s main line fleet. MARK WALSH

Events kick off on May 4 with a steam-hauled positioning move to bring both passengers (in the Mk2 set) and GNR(I) ‘V’ class 4-4-0 No. 85 Merlin from the society’s Northern Ireland base at Whitehead down to Dublin.

Merlin will join LMS-NCC 2-6-4T No. 4 in the RPSI’s Dublin shed for prepping as an Irish Rail Class 071 works the ‘South Kerry Railtour’ the next day.
