IT WAS meant to be a day of pure celebration as the towering 7ft 4in statue of Sir Nigel Gresley was revealed at King’s Cross.

However, despite the powerful representation of the former LNER chief mechanical engineer standing beneath his former office, the ‘elephant in the concourse’ on April 6 was that of the failed bid to incorporate a symbolic mallard at his feet; something that was strongly focused on by the national media.
