South Tynedale officially opens Slaggyford extension

THE South Tynedale Railway’s (STR) Lintley to Slaggyford extension was officially opened in a private ceremony on July 24, reports Dave Hewitt.

The event marked the completion of the Heritage Lottery Fund-backed project.

Statfold Barn Railway’s Peckett 0-6-0ST Harrogate leads the first passenger train to depart from Slaggyford station on July 24. The locomotive is crossing the small road at the station, which although not obvious runs between the newly constructed signalbox and the fences on the left. STR Thomas Green & Company 0-6-2ST Barber (back in service following work at Statfold Barn) led a set of the line’s ‘new’ bogie closed and semi-open carriages into the platform of the reconstructed Slaggyford station, where it was greeted by guests and a pipe band.

Statfold Barn Railway’s Peckett 0-6-0ST Harrogate was on the tail.

Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland Kathryn Tickell OBE cut a ribbon, and following speeches, guests boarded the train to Alston, stopping briefly at Kirkhaugh.
