NEARLY a year later than planned, the first all-night running of London Underground on Friday and Saturday nights began on August 19 on two Tube lines covering 51 stations.
London Undeground said that there were 103,000 journeys over the first weekend of operation with trains running on the Victoria and Central lines. Later this year, night running will begin on the Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines, and this is expected to boost ridership to at least 200,000. The night trains will support around 2000 permanent jobs and boost London’s economy by £360 million.
The initiative was first proposed by former London Mayor, Boris Johnson, in November 2013 with the intention of the service beginning in September 2015.
