First refurbished Class 444 in service for South Western

SOUTH Western Railway’s (SWR) first refurbished Class 444 EMU has returned to service with additional seating capacity and high-quality improvements to passenger accommodation.

The refurbishment and reconfiguration of the train is part of SWR’s £50million ‘Desiro’ interior upgrade programme.

Class 444 No. 444040 is the first of the class to be refurbished internally and repainted in SWR livery. The set is seen passing Eastleigh. MARK V PIKE

It is being delivered by Siemens, the company which built the units from 2002.

All 45 five-car sets will be refurbished over the next two years as part of a wider £110m project to refurbish five train fleets.
